Welcome to the tobacco class actions website

This site is intended to be a one-stop shop to inform members about the class action lawsuits filed against tobacco companies in Quebec, which led to a judgment of nearly $14 billion by the Quebec Court of Appeal on March 1er 2019.

Latest news

On March 26, 2024, the stay of proceedings under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (“CCAA”) was extended by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice to September 30, 2024 to allow the mediation to continue.

The mediation has intensified since the Court ordered the mediator and monitors to develop a plan of compromise and arrangement for the tobacco companies which will lead to a global settlement.

Class counsel actively participates in the mediation on a daily basis and believes that, at this time, the mediation process is the most efficient way to reach a settlement that will result in meaningful compensation for class members.
